Migration and Integration

As a popular country for immigrants, Germany pursues an active integration policy

Germany is a popular country for immigrants. Immigrants make an important contribution to social and economic development.

Germany has become a popular country for immigrants. 24 million people with a migration background live here. Germany is the most popular destination country for migrants in the EU and has become a world leader internationally. Among the 38 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Germany has seen the fastest increase in immigration in recent years. The federal government relies on the migration of skilled labor from around the world.

Many people with a migration background, according to the Statistisches Bundesamt - Federal Statistical Office, in 2022 there were around 13.38 million foreign nationals living in Germany. 24.19 million people had a migration background. This group accounts for more than a quarter of the population. Around 12.2 million people with a migration background held a German passport. More than half of them had been German citizens since birth. Another large group came to Germany as (late) deportees or exiles. The remaining people with a property background were naturalized. In 2020, 109,880 foreigners were naturalized, in 2021 around 131,600 and in 2022 alone 168,545 foreigners applied for German citizenship. Such high numbers were last seen in the 1990s.

Immigrants make an important contribution to social and economic development in Germany. The growing need for skilled workers is attracting qualified people from abroad. The federal government wants to provide more immigration opportunities to fill the labor shortage caused by demographic change. In addition to increasing the domestic labor potential and immigration from EU countries, the federal government sees in the immigration of skilled workers from third world countries such as Turkey a way to counter demographic change and contribute to the security of skilled workers. Furthermore, Germany aims to speed up the visa issuance process and strengthen digitization.
